Native Hawaiian Census History

We believe that sharing historical census information relating to Native Hawaiians is important because these figures directly impacted how the government has viewed our people throughout the years. Native Hawaiians are historically undercounted, leading to less money coming into our communities and less political representation. The purpose of this history section is to reveal how the government has seen us. For each year a census was conducted, the population of total Native Hawaiians living in Hawaiʻi will be provided along with the quantitative change in population from the previous census. Let us use the past to help us strive for an accurate representation in the future.

The presented data are from actual census records for Hawaiʻi provided by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Library and the United States Census Bureau.
